Dutcher/Basquiat/Kilgallen

Dutcher/Basquiat/Kilgallen

Yesterday I passed on the surf and headed up north to meet Mark Dutcher at his Culver City studio. Had the opportunity to see his new work and hang out and talk for a while. I’m very excited to report that we’ll get a chance to see some of this new work in the OC early next year at The Office. More on that later.

Basq After leaving Mark’s I headed over to MOCA to catch the Basquiat show. The interview film downstairs is a must see. My favorites in the show were definitely the later work, primarily from 87 & 88, probably at his most conflicted time but I think you can really see the progression in his work and you really get the sense that we lost a great talent too early one more time. My vote for most haunting piece would have to be Gravestone from 1987. It’s almost like he knew.

Kginstall600b Next stop was the Redcat to catch the Margaret Kilgallen show. This one was the most surprising for me. I’m so use to so many young artists trying to imitate her that I think subconsciously I was expecting more of the same. Well this is the real deal, where it all began. Great show! Now all you young artists quit copying her and go find your own voice…now!

Side note: Does anybody know if Margaret Kilgallen surfed?? See the show and you’ll know why I’m asking.
