02 Oct Discovery in the 909
Went to Riverside this weekend to attend an event and had a great time. Mrs. OCArtBlog and I had a chance to get away for a little bit and see what the 909 had to offer in the way of an art scene and we came away really quite impressed:
Home Base the Mission Inn. Highly recommended if you ever find yourself in downtown Riverside.
First stop was the Riverside Museum of art to catch the Carlos Estrada-Vega show.
Next we ran into the beginning of a gallery scene in downtown Riverside.
Next up was the highlight of the trip, the California Museum of Photography. I’m really kinda embarrased to admit I haven’t been here yet but after my first visit I plan to come back often. They had a great show up titled Faster: The Pomona Drags that included contemporary interventions by artists Kristi Lippire and Matt Wardell. It was really well done and more importantly, fun. If you haven’t been here yet, go! Their next opening will be Oct. 22 from 7-9pm and it only takes 40 minutes on a Sat. to get there. Same as a trip to LA.
Next up was an equal highlight. Right across the street from the hotel the Riverside Metropolitan Museum was showing Cheech Marin’s Chicano Collection. It was a great show. If you go make sure to spend some time watching the video piece that interviews Cheech and some of the artists. Not to be missed.

Posted at 23:36h, 11 OctoberI had a chance to see the exhibits and enjoyed Marin’s collection. There are also vivid Civil War prints inside the Mission Inn. A couple years ago, I did a historical 909 piece and was granted permission to dig into local historical society archives. The accumalation of historical art pieces there were also quite interesting.
