Mindy Cherri & Joanna Grasso @ The Office – Opening Next Sat.

Sexpectations300 The Office is pleased to present Sexpectations by Mindy Cherri with a new video work by Joanna Grasso in our project space.

There will be a reception for the artists Sat. the 24th from 6-9pm

The new work presented in Sexpectations is the artist’s response to what is going on around her and within her. Each piece has become an exploration of domesticity and relationships, specifically the secrets we have within relationships and the fragile nature of relationships. The artist finds it fascinating how conversations amongst friends, lovers and family members are so different, how our choice and use of words is different within each of these relationships. For this body of work the artist specifically chose words and topics that most of us find quite uncomfortable to discuss yet alone display in our homes. Studying the affect of words and the associations we create with words has become a conceptual process for the artist. These concepts are then reflected in her work and are intended to push the viewer to consider the artist’s feelings about the words as well as their own feelings, causing each of us discomfort in the experience of seeing the words and then comfort in knowing each of us is affected in a similiar way.

About Joanna Grasso

Classically trained in sculpture and painting in Florence, Italy, Joanna Grasso has recently moved into video, photography and performance art. Her work is emotionally charged, ironic and often uncomfortably sincere. Elements of time, space and sound are utilized in her artworks to create a highly charged environment that speaks to the essence of human nature, cultural awareness, social issues and personal growth.

This recent video Clean Fun is the documentation of a visceral performance by Grasso, one where the viewer is invited to painstakingly endure the cathartic process of letting go. As the performance progresses tension becomes release; painful memories are put to rest and freedom is won. This particular piece is merely one of many artworks that manifest the artist’s natural curiosity and inquisitive disposition, not to mention her sense of humor. Fasten your seat belts; it is going to be a bumpy ride.
