10 Mar The Dallas Report
I was able to escape some meetings yesterday and make my way over to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center.
The Dallas Museum was showing the Robert Smithson retrospective that had just left LA and it was good to see it in Dallas. Call me crazy but as I was walking through this show I kept thinking of the Dieter Roth retro that MOMA showed last year. They both tackle entropy and decay and they both had that mad scientist thing going. It’s a shame Smithson died at such a young age. It would have been interesting to see where he went next.
Next up I caught William Eggleston: The Los Alamos Project. I like him even better now.
Continuing the theme of highlighting Collectors and what they collect, which Museum’s seem to be doing a lot of lately. DAM presented Grant Hill’s collection of African American Art. Grant shoots a mean hoop for the Orlando Magic but he also has a great collection. Great works by Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett and John Biggers were on display.
The Highlight of the afternoon had to be the Nasher Sculpture center. If you’re in Dallas it’s a must see. They have a little of everybody including: Moore, Gormley, Picasso,Cragg, Shapiro and Borofsky.
But the absolute highlight was James Turrell’s "skyspace" Tending, that was commissioned by the Nasher. I had always wanted to see one of his "skyspaces" and yesterday was my first opportunity. It was breathtaking.
Some days we get caught up in the distraction and noise of the "art world" and then we have an experience where a work of art crashes the gates of our intellect and touches us in our hearts….and we remember why we are so passionate about this thing called art.
I love it when that happens…
