College Yo

Hello my Dears,

Belushicollegebest

Last week Chris posted to a link to story exploring the high cost of MFA’ing.  I, a lowly member of the proletariat class, did not have the same opportunities as my comrades in arms.

So…the question of the day, what role do OC art programs (colleges) play in developing viable artists and collectors?  I am also interested in hearing what programs and maybe prof’s you think help and which don’t (ratemyprofessor.com).  And…even if we can "id" programs that work, why don’t those success stories stay local (i.e. Kevin Costner-I couldn’t resist)?  As always, correct me if…… I, Orangeberg, am wrong.

Let me also state, so lower your rifles, I am not suggesting that this thesis is the only way to cultivate the "said" categories. Merely a starting point for off-campus-book-burning-chit-chat. Tomorrow we will going after museums. Sunday, the galleries of course, and Monday….Monday, the Government.

xoxo,

Orangeberg

CSUF need to offer a class in artist self promotion. Those kids are lost after graduation. At least they don’t have the balloon payments some other kids have.

I earned my MFA at CSUF in 2000. Within months I had a FT teaching job at Riverside Community College. Within a year of that, I had a tenure-track teaching position in the Art department at Santiago Canyon College in Orange. CSUF is local, inexpensive and permitted me to earn a postgraduate degree in 2 1/2 years. One of the inspiring faculty members is Jim Jenkins, the sculptor. Not only is he an excellent instructor, he’s a talented working artist with a national exhibition record. CSUF is not the most exciting university, but it served a purpose, permitting me to get in and out quickly without racking up debt. I met and became friends with a few fellow students, notably Daniel Du Plessis, one of the most inspiring artists I’ve met.
