Opening reception, January 15th from 7 – 10 PMThe Box Gallery in Costa Mesa, California, in conjunction with Ashes In Orange Peels Fine Art is proud to present, GHOST, an exhibition exploring the idea that in every work of art there resides a "ghost." Whether it occurs in the subject matter or just the lingering presence of the artist's hand, art contains a life of its own within representations of the artist/creator. Bringing together six up and coming artists with international reputations spanning London to Los Angeles, GHOST features compelling work in diverse mediums and disciplines.
Artists:Aya Kakeda: Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and currently living in Brooklyn, New York, she brings a wealth of cultural influences to her watercolors. With a childlike sense of honesty and innocence the characters she creates interact with each other in a manner that hints at profound adult emotions. Aya's work has been featured in Juxtapose Magazine, on the cover of the British arts magazine Rooms, and throughout exhibitions from New York to Los Angeles.Ellen Rogers: The photographs of the London based photographer and filmmaker have both a vintage and contemporary ambience. She achieves this effect through a dedication to experimentation in methods that are strictly analog, created through hours of darkroom trials. Only a final image is digitally scanned. She has worked for clients in the fashion industry such as Elite Models and for publications as varied as Vice Magazine and I-D Magazine.
Joy Shannon: She is a print-maker and musician who exhibits her work publicly to supplement her music. Her powerful images, however, cannot be taken as a mere supportive elements. The figures, inspired by her Irish heritage and stories taken from her own life, have been deconstructed, simplified to the most basic expression of line and yet, the result is an image filled with emotion. As a musician, Joy Shannon has experienced much success in the US and Europe with much more to come.
Shannon is set to release her 10th album entitled "The Black Madonna." A release party, featuring a live performance by Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks will take place at the Box Gallery on January, 29 from 7 – 10 PM. Opening for Joy will be singer/songwriter WIll Morrison of The Vacuumbell who has returned to Los Angeles after time away in Portland Oregon. Morrison received critical acclaim for his performance during the 2009 OC Music Award Showcases.
Michelle Wiener: The Los Angeles based artist is inspired by symbolism found in pop culture. The study of history is also a major influence, and as a result we are also confronted with her take on the heritage of identity, especially as it relates to women. Wiener has recently earned her M.A. from Otis College of Art and Design and has shown her work along the West Coast. During her studies, she received a Sandberg Exchange Fellowship that allowed her to travel to the Netherlands.
Kathleen Massalink: Her drawings concentrate on the subject of the paranormal and on superstition as a coping mechanism. Her automatic drawings are focused on her own experiences with connection and loss, and yet oddly universal in their textural appeal. In a sense, Massalink appears to have handed over her creativity to other forces. She is a graduate of Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Sarah Walsh: An emerging painter who has spent her early creative life scouring museums throughout the United States and Europe for inspiration. Working in watercolor and graphite, her hand is always present in the erratic and gestured nature of her line work. Walsh has already received several awards for her work and it appears that she has a prolific career ahead of her.
