Art Events

Thanks to Radha over at The Art Hub for giving me a heads-up about their big event this weekend. Friday night the Art Hub will be hosting Rock Stars & Pin-Ups, a solo photo exhibit by Maggie St. Thomas. Looks like it will run from 8-1am so I'm sure it will be a party. The directions can be found here. ...

About a month back I was asked to be the juror for Orange Coast College's annual student photography exhibition. Well tonight was the opening and the awards ceremony so I headed on over to make an appearance and hand out some awards. For those that have been reading for awhile you know these things aren't a favorite thing to do because I always feel like I want to pick more winners than allowed and I don't want to leave anyone out, especially since anybody involved...

Ran up to Santa Ana last night w/Ed Giardina to catch the Oral Fixation show. It was great to see that DIY attitude again back in SA. Now that the Lofts are in the 800K range and all the rents have skyrocketed most galleries and artists have left for greener pastures. It was also interesting to take Ed out there. He was one of the early pioneers of the artists village with Edward Giardina Contemporary Art and the original Raid Projects. Their first location was...

First Saturday is approaching so that means Santa Ana is going to be the hot spot this weekend. All the regular stuff will be going on, so no changes there, but I did want to point out one particular show you should not miss. Jacqueline Bunge who is the exceptional Curatorial Assistant at LAM and some of her associates are throwing a one night art event that I'm sure is going to be the place to be Saturday night. What: Oral Fixation A Group Exhibition Where: 202...

While I'm trying to find out what's happening in OC this weekend I thought I'd let you know about the $99.99 show taking place this Sunday at the Irvine Fine Arts Center from 4-6pm. There will be a number great artists participating and half the proceeds go to the center. Remember, Carl Berg use to run this joint so I'm sure there will be some great art to be had. ...

After a very busy art weekend I had a little bit of energy left so Mrs. OCArtBlog and I ran over to catch Jeff Foye's show at CSULB. If you haven't been to CSULB's Sunday night gallery openings I highly recommend it. They have four very nice spaces where they run student shows every Sunday from 5-8pm, at least while class is running. It's a great spot for all you curators out there to spot the next great talent. Some photos follow: The crowd. Jeff...

Well we survived the Open House and it actually turned out to be a great time. We met neighbors we hadn't met yet. We watched complete strangers walk through the house thinking it was a real open house and we spent some time with friends and family. We even had a couple come that googled "OC cultural events" and read my blog and decided to check it out, that was pretty cool. Anyway, If you are interested in hosting an Open House of your own,...

One of the crew over at Port gives a nice little rundown on the recent Affordable Art Fair that took place in NYC. Speaking of NYC. Mrs. OCArtBlog and I are going to ditch our families during Thanksgiving week and head to the Big Apple. Anybody want to recommend some must sees while we're there?? I have to take her to the Macy's Parade but other than that it will be all art. Image: Diane Kaufman ...

There's going to be a lot of art to see this weekend in OC and I'll have another post about what's going on later but I wanted to give you a heads up on a Friday night event. Tomorrow night the Art Hub is throwing a little party called the Local Art Outbreak that will feature over 100 artists from Orange County. All the info can be found on the links. Like I always say, support your scene. Hope to see you there. ...

This is a reminder post that after you go to the Office opening this Saturday night we also have something for you to do on Sunday. Come on over and meet my crazy in-laws, I know you want to. It looks like this ongoing project by FS has been curated into a show by Meg Cranston that will open at the Riverside Museum sometime in the spring. So you might even have a chance to see yourself documented on a museum wall...

Mark your calendars!! This Saturday night is the opening for Carrie Yury who will be showing a new series of work created for The Office dealing with plastic surgery and the search for perfection in obsessed Southern California. You might remember Carrie from the last  California Biennial where she was part of Mads Lynnerup's band Fashion Island. She has lots of skills.. The Office will also feature French artist Amandine Piomelli in the project room where she'll be showing recent work from her Imaginary Biology...

As a follow up to my John Waters @ OCMA post. I also wanted to let you know that running concurrently with that show will be the work of Swiss artist Fabrice Gygi. This show will run through March and it is open to the public starting on Sunday the 30th. Enjoy! The works of Swiss artist Fabrice Gygi take the form of site-specific installations, large-scale sculptures, and functional public structures that reference the often unnoticed architecture of authority in urban environments. Many of his...
