The OC Art Blog was created in 2004 as a way to build community and promote the marginalized but dynamic Orange County art scene.

As an undergrad I took many classes that did not count towards my degree; some to pursue personal interests and some were out of confusion as to community college and university requirements.  One such class I erroneously enrolled in was printmaking with The’ Nguyen.  This class was a lower division linocut and woodcut class where I was also taught collagraph, letter press, photo transfer, silkscreen, reductive block printing, and etching into plexi from one man with endless ideas; this was in addition to meeting my...

If you have the chance, I recommend the journey from Orange County to our L.A. County neighbor, Long Beach, for the show Constructions and Excavations featuring the work of Southern California artists Jonathan Anderson and Nathan Huff. Curated by Jeffrey Rau of Sixpack Projects, a  new curating collective. Anderson's body of work entitled "Constructions" and "Impasse" establishes a consistent conceptual framework that uses the flat surfaces of painting to investigate tensions that exist in our understanding of both image and word. Huff's series of "Absurd Excavations"...

PSYCHOPTICBLACKLIGHTFUZZ PART II @ Hurley's )(  Space Gallery, Costa Mesa   When I arrived at Hurley, it was dark and filled with people. Hurley's Resident Artist DALEK and the Dreamachines When I first met artist Dalek I was standing in the main gallery space on the Hurley compound in Costa Mesa, California.  Their VP of Art and Design Scott Patt was filling me in on Hurley's history and extensive community outreach programming, while we waited to meet James Marshall, Mr. Dalek himself. The gallery was dark but alive with neon lines that shot up in rings from a center point in...

When one of OC's most generous and infamous families calls a meeting, we attend. A big a announcement was coming and refreshments were thrown in to entice hungry writers to the scene.   After grumbling about paying $8 to park I moseyed over to the first free food and drink station and proceeded to up my sugar intake for the week.  They sure know how to throw a party.  Live music, free donuts, fireworks and even good old Schwarzenegger came out of retirement for the...

This may be a spoiler.  When I went to 225 Forest Avenue…the Hurley store in Laguna Beach, I had no expectations.  I tried to have expectations, but what is “Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz?”  I believe my open, yet puzzled mind, led me to enjoy this installation more than if someone had tried to explain to me what this was going to be ahead of time.  If someone had told me it is kind of like a rave; there are neon lights; there are strobe lights;...

Last Saturday night, a couple of friends and I went to the D-Block Projects’ inaugural exhibition, “Open Storage” in Downtown Long Beach. We started out the night by entering in the show from the back door. The place was slightly difficult to find.                                  D-Block project invited artists to show their artwork in a storage facility that would not have otherwise be in the public eye. The show intended the artwork to be at random selection from each other, so it was up to the viewers to...
