Good read from Nikki Finke at the LA Weekly on the rise of Michael Ovitz as a top collector. Illustration by Miguel Valenzuela ...

I leave for NYC next week and the first thing on the agenda is definitely Mecca, otherwise known as the Museum everyone loves to hate. It'll be my first visit to the new digs. I usually take a lot of the armchair quaterbacking in stride when it comes to large institutions such as MOMA. It's a pretty easy target. I wouldn't wish that director role on anyone. You'll never make everybody happy. And besides, Saltz really liked Elizabeth Murray. Hard to take his word as gospel...

Volume 1 of Finishing School's latest project Open House is now complete. You can take the tour here. ...

Paul Frank is no longer with Paul Frank. Rebecca Schoenkopf wants more beauty Seven Degrees is doing art shows again. Vampire bunny?? Ugliness tax? I think there might be a person or two in the art world that needs to start paying up. Laguna invades Santa Ana. Stay off our wave...

I had intentions of doing art stuff this weekend but when it came down to it I just couldn't muster up the energy. However I did have the opportunity to catch the new David Mamet farce Romance at the Mark Taper on Saturday night. I've been a fan of Mamet's since Glengarry Glen Ross which is still one of my favorites. Romance is not as dark and depressing, actually it's a comedy but done in Mamet style, so expect lots of f-bombs among lots of...

Ran down to Laguna for some business but also had a chance to catch the Ruby Osorio show at LAM and hit some of the local galleries where I saw a real good show by Scott Greene, a painter I wasn't familiar with, at Sue Greenwood Fine Art. Ruby Osorio's work is much better in person. Initially I was kinda skeptical thinking it was going to be another Marcel Dzama/Amy Cutler kinda thing but I left pleasantly surprised and for all you locals out there that...

According to the OC Insider it looks like OCMA will finally be making the anticipated move to the Orange County Performing Arts Center grounds. So much for the millions spent on the upgrade about a year ago. Do you think The Office might be able to get a deal on the space once they move out?? We are looking you know. ...

After a very busy art weekend I had a little bit of energy left so Mrs. OCArtBlog and I ran over to catch Jeff Foye's show at CSULB. If you haven't been to CSULB's Sunday night gallery openings I highly recommend it. They have four very nice spaces where they run student shows every Sunday from 5-8pm, at least while class is running. It's a great spot for all you curators out there to spot the next great talent. Some photos follow: The crowd. Jeff...

It's official. The OC Art Blog is a year old today. Thank you for reading! I think I got another year in me...

Artblog has an interesting post about a Florida Gallery vetting other Florida galleries. Sounds like someone is afraid of a little competition. Do you think there are any LA gallery people involved in the vetting of other LA galleries for artLA?? ...

Well we survived the Open House and it actually turned out to be a great time. We met neighbors we hadn't met yet. We watched complete strangers walk through the house thinking it was a real open house and we spent some time with friends and family. We even had a couple come that googled "OC cultural events" and read my blog and decided to check it out, that was pretty cool. Anyway, If you are interested in hosting an Open House of your own,...
